On This Day: June 30, 2008 – CM Punk Cashes In MITB Briefcase
On This Day, June 30, 2008, CM Punk cashed in the famous Money In The Bank briefcase on WWE Monday Night Raw. This was Punk’s first official Raw appearance after being drafted to the red brand. This all but cemented his future as a multiple-time world champion, and it let the wrestling world know that he was a top competitor in the business.
The June 30, 2008 edition of RAW took place at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Hometown hero – Jim Ross – was able to give a heartfelt farewell as he was headed to Smackdown. Edge came across like such an awesome bad guy for interrupting him. Then, Batista exacted revenge for being screwed out of the world title the night prior at WWE Night of Champions. Batista starts to beat Edge within an inch of his life and leaves him lying in the middle of the ring. As “The Animal” walks to the top of the entrance ramp, Punk’s music hits. He runs out with a referee, and I’m not sure anyone realizes what’s happening just yet. It wasn’t until Lillian Garcia started announcing that Punk had cashed in then, the Oklahoma crowd went crazy! He hit his GTS finisher on a wounded Edge and got the 1, 2, 3.
It was a little odd to see a babyface win the title in such an opportunistic fashion, although it was fitting since Edge had won the title on two occasions in the same manner. However, CM punk was not the wrestler who dropped a “pipebomb” just yet. He was coming to Raw from ECW, which at the time was WWE’s third-best show. We were drawn to his look and to his martial arts/technical style, but I don’t think anyone thought he would beat Edge for the title on cable television.
Since its inception in 2005, the Money in the Bank ladder match has created some of the most memorable moments in wrestling history. From Edge’s cash in against John Cena in 2006 to Seth Rollins’ cash in 2015 – the briefcase rarely disappoints. Punk’s win would continue this trend in a controversial and dramatic fashion.
That’s the power of the Money in the Bank. The briefcase can take an up-and-coming wrestler and turn them into a superstar for years to come. CM Punk would use it as the stepping stone to becoming, arguably, the most popular wrestler of the past decade. His controversial and legendary career sparked On This Day, June 30, 2008.
