On This Day: July 30, 1985 – Miss Elizabeth Debuts

Elizabeth Huelette makes her WWF debut at a WWF Championship Wrestling taping in Poughkeepsie, New York. On This Day 36 years ago.

For weeks before her debut, many managers courted the services of Randy “Macho Man” Savage. He debuted for the company about two months prior as “wrestling’s hottest free agent.” Managers like, Luscious Johnny V, Mr. Fuji, Bobby Heenan, and Jimmy Hart all pitched their services and were all there when Savage made the announcement. The gig went to Savage’s real-life wife.

You can’t make mention of the women of sports entertainment without bringing to the tip of your tongue Miss Elizabeth. A mainstay in the 1980s, Elizabeth’s elegance is what set her apart from all her female predecessors. Also, her patience, poise, and kindness made our fans fall in love with her. The devotion Miss Elizabeth and Randy Savage showed each other over their years together would fully blossom at SummerSlam 1991, when they married. Reunited with Elizabeth, “Macho Man” would come out of retirement and once again capture the WWE Championship, this time at WrestleMania VIII.

Us fans will never forget the image from WrestleMania VII when a concerned Elizabeth jumped the railing and ran to the ring to defend Savage — who was being attacked by Sensational Sherri after losing a Retirement Match. Elizabeth showed her true spirit when she threw Sherri from the ring. Savage hoisted Miss Elizabeth high on his shoulder as those in attendance wept at the emotional moment.

Miss Elizabeth’s mark on the world of sports entertainment stretches far beyond how many championships she led Randy Savage to. Elizabeth truly was the “First Lady of Wrestling” — she wore extravagant gowns to the ring; she was classy, sophisticated, and independent; and she left big shoes for every female who followed to fill.

Women’s wrestling has come a long way since Miss Elizabeth graced the ring. Women now get to show off their athleticism. They’re not just used as a prop to show off their “assets.” But each person in the locker room has nothing but respect for Miss Elizabeth. They understand that their careers might not exist to evolve with her, and it all started On This Day July 30, 1985.
